Tire recommendation

Alignment is done whenever there’s irregular wear on any tire, whether you change them every 6 months (as I ended up having to do) or every 5 years.

It depends on how rough you are and where you drive; maybe you have to do it every 6 months, while someone else never does because their tires always wear correctly. I’m one of the latter, and I’ve never needed to do it except when something in the suspension has been changed.

This one needed it a long time ago

On the other hand, regarding that “for what it costs” argument, a properly done 4-wheel alignment on a 3D machine costs about 75 euros. Considering that people here (when it suits them) kick up a fuss over a 5-euro difference in tires, if you tell them they have to spend 75 euros more every time they change rubber for an alignment…

That alignment is perfectly aligned; the side wear is down to the owner’s habit of driving it that way… he says he saves a ton on tires, that he only wears out the right ones

It’s not about what it costs, it’s that they don’t do it right at these quick-service shops. I had a very bad experience years ago and since then, if the tires are wearing well and the car isn’t pulling to one side, I don’t do unnecessary alignment.

The whole crystallization thing is a mystery to me. Mine don’t show signs of losing grip either, but after 8 years it seems we all take for granted that “they’re crystallized.” Well, I’ve already decided to change them, but … I still don’t know which ones. I had decided on a middle-ground option, the Continental PremiumContact 7, which have kick-ass reviews, but my car takes 91H and I only see them in 95Y, and I don’t know if that affects anything. I think they’re “XL” even if I don’t see it, meaning reinforced in their structure to handle more weight and/or speed, but I don’t know if that influences the handling in any way…

But yeah, I’m going to change them

There’s a promo at Feu Vert that gives 60 bucks back in fuel until May 13th, I might just go for it

You only needed to go to the Continental website to find out

Nowadays, aaaaall models launched in the last two years are XL, basically because new cars are as fat as prize pigs, and they need tires that can support higher loads.

Regarding load indices, the 91 on your spec sheet and the 95 is the difference between 615 kg and 670 kg per wheel. At the carcass construction level, it’s stiffer (less sidewall flex), resists hits and impacts better, high speed, etc. On the downside, they weigh more and increase consumption slightly, but in practice, it’s negligible.

They will be, due to time and the thermal shocks of heating and cooling, which is really what destroys the rubber. For the same mileage, tires from someone who does short trips will be much worse than someone who drives the car less often but does longer trips.

Man, when I change the tires I’ll do all four. At €75, the alignment isn’t exactly a bargain either. What definitely needs to be done is the balancing, though I don’t remember what that cost.
