Hi guys, I don’t know much about mechanics or tuning, so I wanted to ask here to see if someone could clear things up for me. I have a 10th-generation Honda Civic with a 1.0L 126hp engine, and it’s usually pretty quiet. I’d like to increase the sound a bit without it being over the top and so it can pass the ITV—something road-legal. Is that possible? Can I change the muffler for an approved one without having any issues?
You have several options: the easy one is to change the final section for a road-legal one, and for the aesthetics, modify the geometry and have the tips come out through the middle like the 1.5. You can find a post of mine about my exhausts and sound on a 1.0, Ingarsa certified.
Let’s say I want to change the muffler, the back box, just to add a bit of sound. Is it easy to change? Do I need to go to a mechanic? And what street-legal options are there?
I’d recommend changing the whole section, pipe included—a simple bolt-on swap—so you don’t have to cut and weld mufflers, which is a bit of a hack job. Plus, if you get tired of it or sell the car, you can just put the original back on and that’s it. It shouldn’t be much work; any qualified professional could do it, but I’d still go to someone who does quality welding. For street-legal options, you have Duramas and Ingarsa, and I imagine it won’t cost you more than 350-400.
